If we tell you that many diseases of the body can be cured by massaging the feet, you probably will not believe us. But, Padabhyanga is such a miraculous process in which the body can be kept healthy by massaging the feet.

Yes, feet are very important in Ayurveda and feet are important parts of the body. Ayurveda states that different parts of the feet correspond to different parts of the body. The feet have pressure points called 'marmas'. These are energy centers that run throughout the body.

When pressed, it activates the circulatory energy in the liver, kidney, stomach, neck, heart, head, and other organs. In Ayurveda, there are about 107 marmas in our body of which 5 marmas (vital areas) are located in each foot and they also have many nerve endings. What is foot massage?

The word Padabhyanga is derived from two Sanskrit words 'pad+abhyanga', 'pada' meaning foot, and 'abhyanga' meaning massage. Thus, it is described as calming and soothing massage therapy, if done properly it can completely revitalize and rejuvenate our body and there are many benefits of padabhyanga described in various Ayurvedic texts.

This therapy is also done daily which has to be done before going to bed. Ayurveda tells that out of 107 bodies 5 marmas are located in the feet, and many times they get closed due to one reason or the other. Doing this therapy daily will release the blocked energy and provide many health benefits.

Steps of Foot Massage

Make sure you have a dark-colored towel so that the floor doesn't get oily and you can prevent any chances of slipping.

  • Heat oil or ghee of your choice. (sesame in winter or ghee/coconut oil in summer) Add essential oil of your choice like lavender or rosemary.
  • Apply oil all over the feet.
  • Massage the bones of both ankles in circular motions.
  • Massage the top and bottom of the heel.
  • Gently pull each toe upward and massage from the base of the toe to the top.
  • With both hands, massage the front of the foot vigorously.
  • Using your thumbs, massage both the arches of your feet. Massage here for a while and use firm pressure. This will help in relieving foot pain associated with plantar fasciitis.
  • Gently pull and massage each toe along the back of your foot.
  • Using a closed fist, knead the leg up and down.
  • With both hands, massage the top and bottom of the foot with pressure. Focus on the ball of your foot under your big toe.
  • Then massage your heels.
  • Gently massage the three main marma points in a clockwise motion.
  • Massage the entire foot and wear socks to keep warm and keep the floor from getting oily.
  • Repeat on the other leg.

Precautions in foot massage

The following are some things to keep in mind:

  • Apply pressure to the feet when the patient is comfortable. If she feels any pain or discomfort, don't continue with the massage.
  • In swollen feet, this treatment is not recommended.
  • Padabhyangam should not be performed if there is indigestion, an abnormal condition of the skin, or any circulatory disorder in the lower limbs.
  • If you have any injury on your ankle, toes, or any other part of your foot, the patient needs to consult an expert.

Finally we would just like to tell you that Padabhyanga, a soothing and calming massage is highly recommended before going to bed. A gentle massage including stroking and rubbing of the feet induces better heart circulation in the feet and helps you feel relaxed.
